Grade 2

Count the shapes hiding inside

A line, a triangle, a rectangle -- each picture holds more than it first shows. The trick is the same every time: count the small pieces, then the big ones they make.

  1. 1

    The long one counts

    ABC
Three points A, B, and C lie on a straight line, in that order. Using these points as endpoints, how many different line segments can you name?
  2. 2

    The triangle fan

    ABMNC
In triangle ABC, points M and N split side BC into three parts, and lines join A to M and A to N. How many triangles can you find in the picture?
  3. 3

    Cut in half

    AMBDNC
Rectangle ABCD is cut in half by a line MN joining the midpoints of sides AB and DC. How many rectangles are in the picture?
